Fan makes loud noise on turning on laptop

On turning on the laptop the fans make a very loud sound as if it was broken or dirty (I have cleaned the fans already from dust and they seem to be functioning normally). On turning the laptop off and back on the noise is gone. What could be malfunctioning?

Hi @carlotremolada,

Does the laptop continue to boot up into Windows OK when it starts with a loud fan noise or just stall and then do you have to turn it off and then on again for it to boot all the way to the Windows desktop?

What is the model number of your laptop?

Thank you for your time. The laptop black screens and works only after a standby restart which gets also rid of the noise. Model number is 15-cs3067.

@carlotremolada

Does it also do this if the charger is connected to the laptop?

so far it has only happened when using the battery. Doesn’t happen every time though it seems quite rare. Thank you

Hi @carlotremolada

It seems as though the laptop is failing POST (Power On Self Test) intermittently.

This could be due to a corrupted BIOS.

In the past, when a laptop was turned off, the BIOS settings were maintained by a separate RTC (Real Time Clock aka cmos) battery on the motherboard. This was a non rechargeable coin cell Lithium battery and only lasted ~5 years. When the battery got too low BIOS corruption could occur giving the same symptoms as you describe.

Nowadays the RTC battery function is incorporated in the main battery so presumably it is always charged reducing the incidence of possible BIOS corruption due to an aging RTC coin cell battery.

Just to eliminate the possibility that the main battery is failing and causing the problem, create a battery report to check the condition of the battery.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value versus the Full Charge Capacity value shown by the report. For a good battery they should be nearly the same value. You can work out the condition of the battery as a percentage by using the formula Full Charge capacity value x 100 ÷ Design Capacity value.

If the battery condition is <40% you may want to consider replacing it soon
