My motherboard randomly turns off my GPU
I have an ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 motherboard, I know it's old but it's the only thing I have while I save for a new PC
and what happens is that the board makes the GPU turn off out of nowhere but everything else stays on
At first I thought it was the GPU that I have but I tried with two more on the board and the same problem occurred, I also tried with the other PCIe x16 ports that the board has but the same thing happened
I need help to solve this since I can't be left without a PC right now since I still can't get a new one and I need to use it every day. I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
PC specs:
- AMD FX-8120
- ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0
- Tested GPUs: R7 250, HD 6570, GT 620
Hi @vixeko,
What do you have to do to make it turn on again?

@jayeff When the GPU turns off and the PC is still on, the only thing I have left to do is hold down the power button for a forced shutdown and then when I turn it back on, everything returns to normal until suddenly this problem occurs again.

Is the monitor connected directly to the GPU card or through an adapter/switch of some sort?
Check the PCIe power management setting and turn it to OFF and see if that affects anything. (remember what the setting was before you do this)
Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Change plan settings (next to your chosen power plan) → Change Advanced power settings → PCI Express → Link state power management → off → Apply.
Restart the PC in the normal manner and check. If still no good restore the setting to what it was before.
Since it is intermittent it's a case of trying things until it stops or you make it behave differently so you get more clues as to what's happening.

@jayeff Yes, the monitor is directly connected to the graphics card via an HDMI cable.
I tried to do what you told me but the link state power management option was already disabled
I changed the power plan to high performance, restarted the PC and tried it for a while and the problem occurred again

I don't know the GPU cards but they do not require a power cable to be connected to them as well when they're inserted into the PCIe slot, is this correct?
If they do just wondering it it were a PSU problem.
If not try getting into BIOS and leave it sitting there and check if the card turns off. This is just trying to see if it was OS related or hardware
