How to mount data drive on MacBook Pro 2012 running macOS Catalina

Hi, @beanman56 @hellomacos @danj

I have a MacBook Pro 2012 with macos Catalina installed and I tried to remount the internal data drive as it was unmounted and I got the could not mount "Macintosh HD ---- Data" (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49226.) error message. Can anyone help resolve this issue. I don't know what to do. I'm not a MacBook expert.

I have posted the same question relating to this issue on the Apple Community support website

@macbookuse38039 - Sorry guy I can’t post in the Apple Discussions area, I’m banned! Remember it’s their sandbox and anything that suggests of a product defect is immediately removed as well as any aspects of better quality product. I’ve copied over your inquiry here where I don’t face the limitation.

So to start with let’s restart the dialog as I don’t see the needed basic info to understand where you are here. While I get it you have a 2012 13” unibody MacBook Pro which the systems drive was upgraded to a SSD and the drive is running Catalina.

I’m unsure how you are accessing the drive currently are you trying to leverage Internet recovery directly on the system? Are you trying to use a different Mac system via Target Disk Mode or did you remove the drive placing it into a case and then trying to access it again by another Mac or using a Windows system? This needs to be clarified as there are a bunch of issues at play here which can mess you up.

Also is this your system or someone else’s? That may also be a factor as the users system logon and iCloud user account and password maybe also causing us issues.

@beanman56 - A few of us old timers have been banned and/or had our comments deleted quite quickly after posting. Jessa Jones who is a wiz on microsldering iPad Rehab’s Microsoldering Mom: What’s In Your Toolbox? is another iFixit guru has been as well.

Normally I would start off seeing what the onboard diagnostics offers for clues, sadly Apple broke it! So now we need to use other methods. Here we need an external thumb drive setup with Catalina from a second Mac system. We are making a bootable USB thumb drive using the OS installer application by converting it.

To start with you’ll need a 32GB Thumb drive and using the other Mac formatting it to Mac GUID. Then copy over to it the downloaded installer from here How to download and install macOS then follow these steps Create a bootable installer for macOS

Now with this USB drive try to restart your system it should find it if not you may need to access the Boot Manager service at startup. Basically, you need to press the Option (⌥) key and then select the external drive.

Hi @danj I have managed to reinstall Macos Lion (Macos X) from Recovery after erasing the drive

@macbookuse38039 - Well… that’s sorta good I guess, let’s see if we can get you to a better OS level! Let’s see if we can get you up to Catalina (10.15.7) which is technically the highest Apple offered for this series.

Click on the first Blue link I have in my answer above, down load Catalina onto a 32GB freshly formatted with your Mac thumb drive. Then flow the directions in the second link to convert it into a bootable drive. If you have a second Mac which is running Sierra or newer I would suggest using it to setup the thumb drive as Lion uses an older version of HFS which may not work here. Then now with this thumb drive plugged and you reboot your system you should be now accessing the thumb drive OS and can install Catalina onto the internal drive.

@danj I have had a conversation with Apple over the phone and they provided me with the same link you are providing me. I will upgrade to High Sierra first then upgrade to Catalina. Why have you been banned from Apple community website??!!

@macbookuse38039 - Telling the truth doesn’t sit well with them. Louis Rossmann was also kicked out for the same reasons. Remember it’s their sandbox!
