Early 2015 MBP with Monterey does not recognise OWC Aura Pro X2 SSD

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade an early 2015 13" MacBook Prothat has previously had Monterey installed on the factory SSD

I purchased an OWC Aura Pro X2 480GB SSD from iFixit for this as it was the recommended upgrade option. Unfortunately when rebooting into internet recovery after installing the new SSD the drive is not detected.

These drives do require at least Sierra to have been installed on the original SSD to provide firmware support for the Aura Pro drives, however this machine had Monterey installed so I am wondering if the Monterey installation had removed the required hardware support for this SSD that was in place since Sierra. Or perhaps this SSD is just dead on arrival.

Has anyone any experience of this issue?

Lets try to unwind things a bit... OWC needs High Sierra to function as Apple supplied the required API support for third party SSD drives within it.

Internet Recovery will offer you Sierra or older depending on what was installed not the needed version to run OWC SSD's. You can over ride this using the Startup command Option-Command-R. Sadly, it's not a guarantee! As such I always use a Bootable USB OS installer thumb drive and besides its faster!

Here's the links to create the Bootable OS installer thumb drive. The first if you don't already have the OS installer file and the second to convert it once you copied it to a drive thats been formatted with Apple GUID structure via a Mac.

Hi Dan, ok I will try that, I had probably misunderstood that the ssd drivers were installed as firmware onto the ssd controller. And thus they would still be present on a logic board were the host Mac OS had been upgraded thru High Sierra up to Monterey. From what you have said above that is incorrect and the driver only exists within code within the operating system. You might confirm this if it's convenient to do so.

There is no option to pick an intermediate OS to install, its either what came with your Mac or the latest applicable version for that machine so the USB method is my only option.

From https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204904:

Command-R: when you press and hold these two keys during the startup process, macOS Recovery will offer the current version of the most recently installed macOS.

Option-Command-R: when you press and hold these three keys during the startup process, macOS Recovery may offer the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

Shift-Option-Command-R: when you press and hold these four keys during the startup process, macOS Recovery may offer the macOS that came with your Mac, or closest version still available. "

@dickonwhitehead - The blade SSD support has two elements the firmware to enable the API support at the hardware level and within the OS kernel to offer the service.

So in your case you have the proper firmware installed but the OS you are trying to run on the system has no idea how or what is being asked of it as its not the correct version.

Thanks Dan, the USB Installer for Monterey worked without any fuss, I already had one of those to hand which made it very painless.
