Magsafe not charging consistently. Is it the battery or the port?

Hi,

Connecting to the adapter, I often have to wiggle or re-position the magsafe several times to get it to charge. I've tried two adapters with the same result. I know the battery is old (1400+ cycles) but will replacing the battery fix this? Or might it be a problem with the port?

Related question: If it's the port, I have a 13" from the same era. Can I just take the port from that one and swap them? Are they compatible?

Thanks.

Likely both! Inspect the contacts both the cable and the systems socket as well. Use a cotton swab (Q-Tip) with some isopropyl alcohol and clean the socket so the contacts and insulator is not loaded with dirt and corrosion. The cable contacts and the cable it’s self should be in good shape if the cable has knots in it that’s a sign the wires inside are damaged.

As you have exceeded the life of the battery it’s not helping you and can cause the system to overheat! Basically, the battery can’t hold all of the power the charger is sending to it so it spills out like over filling a bucket. Here that spillage is heat! Both at the MagSafe connector as well as the logic board and battery. The battery tends to swell up pressing on the case causing more problems!

So please get a new battery MacBook Pro 15" Unibody (Early 2011-Mid 2012) Battery and you might need a new MacBook Pro Unibody 13" and 15" MagSafe DC-In Board as well.
