Why does my Joy-con keep unpairing my other Joy-con?

I recently got two new Joy-con. However, when I went to pair them to the console, the right one paired just fine, but the left refused to connect. I removed both Joy-con and just attached the left one. The left one then paired, but the right one unpaired and did not reconnect. I unpaired all of the joy-con from the device, but that did not help and neither did restarting the system. How should I proceed?

There are a few avenues you can take for a problem like this. Check another set of Joy-Con or combination of them to isolate the problem to the controller(s) or the Console as a preliminary step if possible. Regardless, consider the following options:

  • After unpairing all previous controllers/wiping the Switch's pair history, try to sync your Joy-Con wirelessly and not directly.
  • Update your Switch if it isn't on the latest firmware and restart it- something you may have already done.
  • Go to the Controllers and Sensors menu and select Update Controllers. Reset your Joy-Con and see if they work right.
  • Put your Switch in Airplane Mode and change the settings to allow controllers to connect. Connect your Joy-Con in this state.

Maybe one of these methods will do the job.

Thank you for responding. I know that it is a problem with the Joy-con and not the console because my other Joy-con can pair just fine. Unfortunately, none of the methods listed has worked for me. Thank you for your time.

@calebgross57932 No problem. It'd have been nice if a more basic solution would have managed to fix the issue. Have you connected this pair to another Switch and found exactly the same behavior? An alternative measure might be to shell-swap one of the Joy-Con with another. If this is a problem that occurs when the controllers are paired with each other specifically, that's something to consider.

Looking into that particular variant, unless you re-shelled them yourself, it seems like they're counterfeit/third-party Joy-Con with shells based on the Hori D-pad controller. There might be some kind of ID conflict where the two are recognized as the same unit or something of the sort, causing one to unpair the other.
