Any idea what I need to change it works fine when plugged in but switches off when unplugged

Sounds like the battery needs replacing.
Here's the ifixit HP Omni 10 Battery Replacement guide that will help.
Search online for CD02 HSTNH-L01B battery to find suppliers that suit you best. (supplier example only to show possible cost of battery)
