Replogle Vintage Globe Repair

I found an old Replogle globe from a thrift shop. I always wanted to have one, and despite it being old, and in a language I cannot even read or speak, I am happy.

My issue is that the globe does not spin freely, because the globe seems to be sitting lower than usual at the bottom.

How does one remove the spindle (metal rod running through the center) on one of these? If I could safely remove the spindle (without any further damage to it), then maybe I can insert a plastic bushing to make the globe spin freely again? When I raise the globe, (like with my finger there) it spins freely. So I think the globe sits too low and there must be something missing. Or it could be something else. Maybe something on the inside?

Or, if you have another suggestion and maybe have seen this issue before I would appreciate a fix here!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Paul,

I don't know anything specific about your globe - cool find, by the way - but I did have an idea here.

It looks to me like the bottom of the spindle is held by basically a simple crimp of the metal the shaft slides through. It doesn't look like there's a way to release the crimp with the shaft in place, but if there was that would be the place to start. Otherwise, my first impression would be to use a slim punch to drive the shaft out of the crimp, assuming the top of the globe is held on by that same sort of crimp.

I'm not sure what is causing the globe to not spin freely, but I wouldn't think it would be too hard to find another nylon spacer to insert at the bottom to raise it up the amount you've indicated. Since it looks like it's already got a nylon washer on it, the addition of a second one should give you a pretty friction-free rotation.

Those are my own thoughts on the subject; I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has actual experience with these things as well. Good luck with it; let us know how it goes!

Hello Jerry!

Thanks for the quick turnaround.

Yes, it appears that adding another nylon spacer will do the job. I just need to figure out how to drive the shaft out of the (lower) crimp like you said. And then insert another nylon spacer of the same size.

And you are correct that the top of the globe is held on by the same exact crimp. :)

Cheers!

If you figure this out, please share. I too have a Replogle globe that I can't seem to get apart. I don't have replacement parts, like crimps or nylon spacers, so if I can get the rod out without destroying the crimps, spacers, or globe itself that would be great. I need the globe to come completely off the rod and out of the rings so I can repair some of the paper sections and be able to reassemble it without having to replace any pieces. Thanks!
