Buzzing, tapping, clicking sound coming from SD card reader port

Hello Forum,

Had some noise coming from my 14" which I initially thought were dirty fans, so cleaned them out, stripped out the logic board etc..

Then I thought it was from speakers but with the back open I narrowed it down to coming from the SD port!? Constant, and at times very loud, and always super annoying.

  1. This is soldered directly onto the board which is great, Does anyone have any opinions on desoldering the part off, and leaving it off, feels like a bad idea, can't see an option to buy a replacement at first glance either.
  2. I'm open to some other hacks also, already tried first aid in recovery mode, no faults showing. All software on mac and apps are up to date. noticed you can't do a resetting pram and smc on M1, it's Auto on restart?

Have you done any isolating? This seems unlikely to be the SD slot to me. But it could definitely be there is some interference coming from this area due to its proximity to a speaker. Have you looked into the SD card slot itself? Even posting pictures of this area could help. Does the noise still occur if you disconnect the speaker?

You can probably desolder it, but I don't know what kinds of consequences that might have. I'm not sure it would be a big deal, but many of these newer Macs throw a hissy fit when parts are missing.

Agreed! This is a benign part, but the logic behind it is likely the source!

Many years ago I was trying to locate a sound source within a logic board. Using some scrap parts I made a tiny directional microphone! That way as I passed it over the logic board it would allow me to ID the area more precisely. Another trick I use is reagent grade 92% or better isopropyl alcohol wetting the area. Often the part in question will be running hotter than the other parts, so looking at the evaporation rate to ID the area and hopefully the discrete part.

@danj Clever use of microphone for sure! Isopropyl is also a hot tip (pun definitely intended).

These sort of whiny, clicky noises are often inductors that are failing. (They're usually bigger parts on the board that are used to assist in voltage conversions) Usually a bad inductor, you can tell is bad just by looking, but ispropyl will help.

@flannelist - Yes, inductors are a common culprit! But I’ve hit a few Amp transistors and even MOSFETs oscillating, often it’s a solder joint!

@flannelist ok thanks, will peel back the black and have a peek, already cleaned out the actual slot, and tried running Mac with SD card inserted to no avail.

Already had a decent look over both sides of the logic, but nothing really jumped out. Will try iso sounds like a solid next step.
