Repair guides, troubleshooting information, and service help for refrigerators manufactured by General Electric (GE).

Our fridge is one year old: freezer won’t seal shut anymore.

GE refrigerator door won’t seal shut properly- just closes but not a strong seal- and the freezer compartment and fridge compartment get condensation which then freezes again in freezer… so it has little ice dots all over…

It’s only one year old🙄we just passed the 1 year warranty mark…

Any ideas on what it could be or if we can fix it ourselves?

Hi @lisaflkc,

What is the model number of the refrigerator?

We bought a 2023 GE Profile Refrigerator in April ‘23 . The freezer door seal came off after 2month. We worked with GE and they sent us a new door seal after 2-3 months of waiting. One day after they install the new seal. It came off again and the compressor started making noise. Very disappointed at their seal design and quality.

There are a few common causes for a refrigerator door not sealing properly. Here are some potential reasons and possible solutions:

  1. Dirty or Damaged Door Gasket: The door gasket is the rubber seal that lines the edge of the refrigerator and freezer doors. Over time, it can collect dirt or become damaged, leading to a weak seal. Clean the gasket using mild dish soap and warm water, wipe dry, and check for any visible signs of damage. If the gasket is torn or significantly worn, it may need to be replaced.
  2. Misaligned Doors: If the refrigerator or freezer doors are not properly aligned, they may not seal tightly. Check if the doors are level and if they close evenly. Adjust the hinges or leveling legs as needed to ensure proper alignment.
  3. Obstructions: Make sure no items are blocking the door from closing fully. Sometimes, food packages or containers can interfere with the door's ability to seal tightly.
  4. Excessive Frost or Ice Buildup: If the freezer compartment has excessive frost or ice buildup, it can prevent the door from sealing properly. Thawing the freezer and removing any excess ice may solve the issue. Ensure that the freezer door is closing properly without any obstructions.

If you provide your specific model number it'll be easier to narrow in on a cause should these common causes not prove to be the issue.

Thank you Matt! It turned out to be a misaligned door- which ge is replacing for free! Apparently it was assembled incorrectly- not properly hung on it's hinges in the first place. I am not sure why it took a year to start to exhibit the effects of this- But we use this as a garage fridge, so don't open the freezer many times a month. Perhaps that is why. I sure do appreciate your very thorough answer! you were right on the money!
