What is the orientation of the replacement LVDS display cable?

I have an early 2014 Macbook Air that had a flaky display so I purchased the replacement display cable (MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2012-2017) Display LVDS Cable) and replaced it using the guides. However the replacement cable does not have any markings on the main body end to indicate which side should be "up". The original cable has a white dot on one side which appears to be the bottom, and a QR code on the handle/tag which also appears to be on the underside.

When I boot the laptop I get a blue screen with vertical lines. A secondary display works but without access to the main display I can't login.

I considered turning the connector over and trying the other orientation, as it appears to fit either way, but I don't want to let the magic smoke out.

Is there a way to determine which way this cable should be connected? And is it safe to connect it the "wrong" way?

Thanks

I figured out the orientation by comparing the old and new cables - the "top" has the line of gold connectors and the "bottom" has a could of long horizontal metal lines, so basically the "pins" face up.

I swapped the old LVDS cable back in and still had a blue screen with lines, but it mostly went away when I adjusted the screen angle and pressed on the display ribbon cables on the bottom of the panel. Still one vertical line so I must have damaged it during disassembly, but the display works otherwise.
