Gas gauge not reading correctly

My gas gauge is showing about an 1/8 of a tank after filling it completely. Any ideas what I can look for? I did some research and saw there is an instrument panel self test you can perform to eliminate possible issues that way, but I don’t know how to do that? Any help would be appreciated.

In the shop we use a scanner to operate the gauge cluster.

The likely cause of your gauge reading incorrectly is the gas gauge sending unit. It's located inside the gas tank.

It IS involving Gasoline.

It IS creating a fire hazard while performing the repair.

It IS a dangerous job but can be done.

It requires the removal of the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank and that is located under the back seat of the car. It's removed as an assembly including the fuel pump housing and the fuel tank pressure sender and should be replaced as a complete assembly. You have to protect the back seating area including the carpets from gasoline drips and spillage getting everywhere. Do it in a well ventilated area with no source of ignition, sparks (Gas Hot Water Heater). If you're going to use a fan to force the air through the vehicle, then use the fan to blow the air through and do not have the fan set so it sucks the fumes out of the vehicle through the running fan. I would recommend this repair to be done at a repair shop.

The fuel pump is NOT the HIGH Pressure Pump located on the engine. It is the low pressure fuel delivery pump located inside the gas tank. It's available at the dealer of course and through any auto parts including Rock Auto. I do not know if the fuel gauge assembly is sold separately but for sure it's included in the fuel pump assembly.

Reply if you want more information on how to perform the repair as safely as possible on your own.
