How to read data on Windows when using the iFixIt external SSD device?

Hey guys!

Recently, my early 2015 MacBook Pro 13" had its logic board short out, and repairing it is kind of out of the question for such an old laptop. I had lots of data on the internal SSD, so I decided to purchase the external SSD enclosure from iFixIt in hopes that I can just mount the SSD inside the device and plug it into my windows desktop and extract the files. Upon connecting the USB, my Windows PC recognized the device connected but I cannot seem to find it in File Explorer. I am under the impression that I may need some sort of 3rd party software to read and extract the files, since they are coming from my MacBook. Is there any free software out there that can do this? If not, any recommendations on paid software? Thanks in advance!

@zackmccarthy What MacOS version were you running on your Mac?

完成的

@andrewsawesome the last I had the laptop running was the first week of April this year, and it was up to date at the time

If you go into the Macintosh HD-Data part and look in the subfolders, can you see files?

完成的

@andrewsawesome only file types, like if I go into "Audio" it will show me how much are .mp3, .wav, etc.

完成的

@zackmccarthy I would try the 8 say free trial of APFS for Windows by Paragon software then (https://dl.paragon-software.com/demo/apf...).

Well… it’s not that simple

The version of MacOS is a big factor! If you are still running Sierra then you can get a software add on which allows access to HFS+ file system. But that still might not help as not all file types Apple Mac apps use are available in Windows apps.

If you have High Sierra or newer it uses APFS for its file system. Sadly Apple has not offered the needed details for 3rd party’s to create the needed tools to access the file system.

Your best option is find a friend who has a Mac so you can read the drive and then copy the files over to a Windows readable drive. Just remember not all of the files are compatible!

It was the latest version as of the first week of April this year, and it was up to date at the time. I have a trial of MacDrive Pro downloaded, and only after downloading was my Windows PC able to detect the SSD Enclosure from iFixIt. I have attached a screenshot of what shows up when I look inside. I noticed two drives show up, an E and an F. When I try to open the E drive, it asks if I want to format but I am pretty sure if I hit that button it would erase the data, so I hit cancel.

@zackmccarthy - You will need to talk with the MacDrive Pro folks. As far as I know no one offers a workable solution.

@danj dang, I am unsure what to do in that case. Just spent $100 just to not be able to read and recover the data from the drive :(

@zackmccarthy - You’ll need to talk with them to get a refund.

@zackmccarthy Let's Start with DiskInternals Linux Reader (despite the name, it can also read HFS+ and APFS)

You can download it by clicking here.

DO NOT CONNECT THE DRIVE UNTIL AFTER THE SOFTWARE IS INSTALLED.

Once the software is installed, connect the drive to your computer. If it is in HFS+, you should be able to copy the data off to your computer. Just highlight the files you want to copy, click the save button in the toolbar (big red plus icon), select "Next", select the folder you want the files to be saved into, then click "Next" two more times. When it is finished, you can click the "Finish" button.

If the drive is in APFS, you will need to pay for Linux Reader Pro, which is $29.99 (available here). However, I would try the free version first (you would still be able to view files saved to an APFS drive, just not save them).

It seems to be all APFS

完成的

@andrewsawsome - I gave it a try back in October with no joy. So far I have not found a utility that works.

完成的

@zackmccarthy In that case you will either need to buy Linux Reader Pro (https://store.payproglobal.com/checkout?...) or you can get a free 8 day trial of APFS for Windows by Paragon Software (https://dl.paragon-software.com/demo/apf...)

@danj What didn't work? What machine was the hard drive/SSD used in?

完成的

@andrewsawesome - I was working with a SSD. I ended up just recovering from my backups. Took me over four days as the log was messed up.
