What happens if I try to repair a phone while it remains on?

I selected the Samsung Galaxy A70 as the device because it is the phone I am trying to repair at this exact moment, but it is a general question.

I need to change the screen of a phone, but since the touch doesn't work I have no way to turn it off.

Do I necessarily have to wait for it to turn off? Is there any unrecoverable damage if I try to fix it while it is on? (I would have to remove the battery as well).

In general, of course you want to turn off any electrical device before servicing it. In cases like yours, though, the next best thing is to make disconnecting the battery the first thing you accomplish once you have it open.

In your case you'll have to disconnect the midframe before you can get to the battery connector, but there's not too much that can be damaged on that part. On other devices like iPhones, once you have it open you can almost always disconnect the battery as the very first step before doing anything else.

Unfortunately, it is a phone that I have to return intact, the touch doesn't work, do you know an alternative method to turn off the phone?

@most99 you have to return intact? You have to take it to bits. You cannot replace the screen without doing so. Remove the back. Unscrew and remove the frame. Disconnect the battery and fit the new screen then reassemble and return it intact. Simple.

There are several reasons that you would want to turn off any electronic before you repair it. For starters not properly disconnecting/turning off your device may lead to further damage, or potential bodily injury. When a phone is powered on, it carries an electrical charge, and interfering with its internal components could lead to short circuits or electrical shocks.

Additionally the phones operating system and softwares may interfere with the repair. For example, your phone might not pick up that you replaced the screen, and might not provide proper power to the component. Alternatively an accidental loose screw could cause a bridge between two components and could cause the component to become damaged due to an unintended electrical current.

If you can, power off the phone and disconnect the battery before attempting any repairs.

@most99 as long as you can disconnect the battery safely then you should be able to proceed with the repair.
