Black Screen and Low Power Charging

Hi, I’m a Mid 2012 15” MacBook Pro Retina use, I bought it second hand.

My computer usually loses its screen in situations that require high graphics power and the keyboard's backlight continues to turn on

I tried all the applications in the forum, I could not get any results. My computer's battery and charger (probably) confirm that it is original in software and physical. Since the power of the battery is low in the coconut battery, the usage time is about 2 hours on average

I did not open the inside of the computer, but I did everything that could be tested from the outside in terms of software.

When I turn off the automatic graphics and switch to the GT650M, the screen goes out again shortly after the Mac is turned on. When I turn the computer off and then on, it says that the computer both shuts down due to an error and shuts down forcibly.

It's true that I turned it off, but what does it mean if the computer realizes that it's shutting down? In the future, I will open the inside of the computer and share the conditions and photos of the parts with you. I tried all the things like SMC, NVRAM, Safe Boot and no results. heavy load on battery (probably when the GT650M wasn't working, I didn't experience such a situation when it was on battery.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Your battery does indeed need to be replaced. In this case the age of the battery has done you in, as over time the chemistry of the battery breaks down. The battery is the original one from 2012, Lithium Ion batteries have about four years of life. Here’s what you need MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Mid 2012-Early 2013) Battery and here’s the guide to put it in 2012年中期视网膜屏Macbook Pro 15''电池替换教程

As far as the graphics messing up a weak battery can cause issues if you are running heavy graphics stuff. So you do need to deal with the low hanging fruit issue first. But as you are going in to replace it you should also clean out the dust buildup which I’m sure is not helping matters as the CPU and GPU both need adequate cooling both at the heat sink as well as the fans.

I would clean and re-paste the heatsink with fresh thermal paste, do use care as a little goes a long way!

I often encounter systems which I swear I needed a shovel to clean the over abundance of TIM people would put on “A lot more does a lot better attitude” which is so far the wrong direction!

To help you see the scale of what’s needed after you clean off the old paste cut a piece of the thinnest tissue you have to the size of the silicon chip, now wet it and roll it into a tight ball. Even that is too much when the TIM is squeezed flat.

Use a soft small paint brush to carefully scrub the surfaces and use a can of can’ed air with short blasts to push the debris out of the heat sink fins and fan blades.

That should fix things.

I can do what you said, but the minimum cost of buying a battery for the computer starts from $100 in my country. In this respect, I don't know if it would make sense to buy a new battery because I paid over my Mac $200, a new one can be easily found in the market for $250. Probably if the problem is I/O flex and or other maintenance, I agree, but if you think that the battery is a problem for sure, I will break into pieces and sell the device. You can contact me for the situations, reports and screenshots you need to make the right decision.

Your opinion is valuable to me.

@shzg - I doubt you can get a new Mac for $200 USD, you could snag a used one for that price. But you are likely to find it to needs a new battery. But do make the effort to find a replacement system, maybe you’ll be lucky!

As far as the battery it’s lost it’s ability to run property. So it’s a sure thing in needed to be replaced. Is it the only thing? I can’t tell you that as i would use a test battery to check the system out and run the onboard diagnostics. Restarting the system and pressing the D key to enter. Then you have something useful to go on.

To test this battery fault, do you think it's reasonable for me to remove the battery and test without the battery to estimate the area of the fault? Or is this condition of the battery 100% causing this problem? because we don't know there may be a problem with the i/o cable or something else.

@shzg - Sorry, disconnecting the battery won’t change things as your system will go into CPU Safe Mode, ramping up the fan and reducing the CPUs clocking as SMC wants to protect your system from heat damage.

Time to get that battery…

i was just planning to use it to test the sudden shutdown. I'll probably assume the problem is in the battery if it stops the sudden shutdown.

Here you want to check the options for the display and to be honest all the other settings, to make sure it isn't set to turn off the display when charging. Once you are done making changes click "Apply" and then "OK" and reboot the computer (turn it off and back on). See if this resolves the issue.

Will
