Trying to upgrade to Monterey

Hello,

I've been trying to upgrade my MacBook Pro from Mojave to Monterey. I got an error message stating that my (aftermarket) internal SSD can't be upgraded due to a firmware issue. The 'net suggested I buy an Apple SSDD and install it.

I did so.

The Apple SSD will only recognize and allow Yosemite to be installed - it won't recognize anything else, and the apps working weirdly - I can't even boot up from an external HD, the system is requiring a password that I can't know...

Can the Apple SSD be saved & made to work? Reformat somehow? The MacBook works perfectly with the aftermarket SSD in it... Any advice greatly appreciated - what a pain this is...

Update (02/28/2023)

Dan,

This MacBook is the only computer I have capable of running OS Monterey. I've reformatted the Apple SSD twice, the only options I'm offered is variations of 'OS Extended Journaled'. The SSD is somehow limiting this MacBook to Yosemite when it is installed. I went ahead and ordered an 'enclosure' that will allow me to work with the SSD without having to install the thing in the laptop. The SSD looks correct to me:

Do you have access to another system? The trick here is to leverage Target Disk Mode of your system and via a Thunderbolt cable connect to the other Mac system.

Reference Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode

The idea here is to fully wipe the new drive as it sounds like something is present on it. Then install a fresh OS (Monterey). If that fails you’ll need to get a different drive as you may have the wrong one.

If you can post a picture of the labels so can check it out.

@mster - Well not good…

The SSD you got is for a older 2014 system not the 2015 system. I’m suspecting the installer sees this and won’t install.

Here’s what you got referencing BeetsTech MZ-JPU512 - Apple proprietary PCIe 2.0 x2 interface

This is the correct drive MZ-JPV512 - Apple proprietary PCIe 3.0 x4 interface

Note the one letter difference in the model ID U Vs V is the difference of the PCIe interface from PCIe 2.0 x2 to PCIe 3.0 x4. The last digit (x2 - x4) refers to the number of lanes the SSD offers 2 Vs 4
