Repair guides, troubleshooting information, and service help for refrigerators manufactured by General Electric (GE).

Freezer Not Cold Enough

I have a GE built in model ZIS42NYA refrigerator. Even with the freezer control set to maximum cold (9) and the refrigerator set to 3, the freezer doesn't get cold enough. The refrigerator temp is about 34 degrees but the freezer won't get any colder than 16 degrees. The condenser fan works and I've cleaned the condenser coils. What could be causing the problem.

Hi,

Is the compressor motor running continually trying to drive the temp down to the set temp or does it stop for a short while seeming to indicate that the set temp has been reached, before starting again a short while later?

If it does stop then check if the freezer door seals are OK and sealing the door properly preventing cold air from escaping the compartment (or warmer air from entering if you prefer).

Place a sheet of paper between the door and the door jamb and with the door closed normally, try to pull the paper out. It will come out with a bit of an effort but not easily and should definitely not fall out by itself. Try this at various places around the door, top, bottom and both sides as this will also check the door alignment in case it is a hinge problem.

Yes, the compressor runs continuously. If I crank the freezer temp control knob to 1 (the warmest setting) the compressor shuts off. It will come back on again when I change it back to 9 (max cold). The door gasket looks fine firmly holds paper around the entire perimeter.

Given that the refrigerator compartment is OK (although it is a bit cold it should be 37°F), double check that the evaporator fan (see part #610 &613) for location) is operating correctly and that it is not iced up etc.

It is located behind a panel inside at the rear of the freezer compartment. To access it you remove the panel from the front i.e. via the door at the front of the compartment.

It is this fan that drags air across the freezing cold evap unit and blows it throughout the freezer and also into the refrigerator compartment. There's an air damper between the two compartments which opens and closes to regulate the cold air into the refrigerator compartment dependent on the temp sensor in the refrigerator compartment.

I'm wondering if the evap fan is OK. It's cold enough in the freezer to keep the refrigerator at the correct temp but obviously not the freezer.

If it is OK then it may be a sealed system problem i.e. lack of refrigerant (leak?), blockage in the sealed system or even a faulty compressor.

The only way to know for sure is to get the sealed system high and suction pressures tested to make sure that they're both OK.

Depending on your location you may need to get a licensed repairer to do this due to the environmental regulations regarding the handling of refrigerant gases.
