Battery replaced. HOW DO I GET RID OF THE ICON BADGE?!

Look, I get it -- the phone won't recognize the new battery. It won't tell me its health status. Ok fine.

BUT WHY IS THERE A NOTIFICATION BADGE ON MY SETTINGS APP ICON?!!!!! How do I get rid of that?!!!!! I have tapped on the "Important Battery Message" a dozen times. I have tapped on Learn More (which takes me to an Apple website that basically tells me what I already knew.) HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS NOTIFICATION ON THE ICON?!!!!!!! NO ONE SAID A THING ABOUT HAVING TO LIVE WITH THIS RED BADGE FOREVER!!!!!! THERE HAS TO BE A WAY!!!!!!

You can't. Apple pairs the battery, display, and Home Button to the logic board, and restricts function until you have them replace it.

So why isn’t there a WARNING about the STUPID NOTIFICATION BADGE on the SETTINGS ICON when you look at iFixit’s product page?!!!! There’s a warning about no battery health monitoring. There’s a warning about Apple binding the battery to the serial number of the phone, etc., etc. BUT NOWHERE IS THERE A WARNING THAT YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH A STUPID RED ICON BADGE ON YOUR FRICKIN SETTINGS APP ICON FOR THE REST OF THE PHONE’S LIFE!!!!!!!

@laurence5905 It's not mentioned because most people are not as agitated as you about the badge. Also, as @strongbow said, it will disappear after a couple of weeks.

@laurence5905 I understand your frustration with Apple's decision to lock you into their own repairs rather than being able to do that repair yourself and the fact that it had unanticipated consequences for you.

Yes, the warning is permanent and cannot be eliminated unless you do one of two things.

First, if you still have your old battery, the BMS, or Battery Management System, the little circuit board that's attached to the battery, could be cut off and welded onto a new battery cell. That would give you the benefits of a brand new battery without the warning. However, the BMS would still contain all the old battery data and would be incorrectly reporting the cycle count and battery health to the phone unless you use a device programmer like the Qian Li iCopy device to zero out those counters.

The second option is to use Apple's self-repair program to replace the battery. To do that you have to buy the battery from Apple AND rent their equipment to do the job. That will get rid of the warning as well.

One of the best features of iFixit over other repair sites is that users can make changes to any page, so it's entirely within your ability to go in and edit that page to add a warning to others that the replacement will also give them a permanent notification badge on the Settings icon if you so desire.

Ignore it, it'll disappear after a week or two

@strongbow Hi Nigel, sorry, I might not have been clear. It's my understanding that the popup warning that you get when you wake up your phone does go away after a week or so, but the settings warning stays permanently. I was referring to the latter, since that's what Laurence was upset about. Have I misunderstood how it works? You'd know better than me since you do this sort of thing for a living.

@dadibrokeit I fitted a new battery to my own iPhone and had the annoying red icon on the settings app. It eventually disappeared over time. There is also the option of taking the ribbon assembly off the old battery that contains the chip and spot welding it onto the new battery. You can now by a battery without a connection ribbon ready to fit the old connection on to.

Wait - so this stupid red icon-badge will go away on its own?! Someone needs to put that somewhere obvious. That’d save a ton of frustration.

I solved this for myself.

Just create an Apple Shortcut that opens the Settings app (don’t search for settings, search for open app) for you, add it to your Home Screen and to make it fancy, screenshot the icon of the real settings app before, so you can have the normal icon on the shortcut. No more red badge!
