Brand New GE GNE27JYMFS makes revving noise every 10 second or so

Just installed yesterday. Seems to cool fine. Motor running constantly and every 10 seconds or so it makes a short revving sound, like when you rev your car. Sounds like a fan trying to kick into a higher gear but not making it. Very annoying and distracting when trying to watch tv in the next room. Will call for a service call because I can't keep an appliance that sounds like this. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. And YES I read the whole manual and it doesn't describe this noise.

GE fridge freezers are incredibly disturbing, and GE is quite happy with that, they don't see a problem with a unit causing so much noise that you want to wear ear plugs all day. I am so angry, GE couldn't care less. I've had the fan changed, plus a visit from GE tech who fully admitted it's really loud and it's tough sh*t. I wish I had thought sooner to contact my credit card company and tell them I was sold something not fit for purpose.

Hi @jackie113,

With new refrigerators when turned on for the first time after being installed, it can sometimes take between 12-24 hours for the compartments to reach their set operating temps as the whole interior of the compartments i.e. compartment linings etc have to be cooled down as well as the air inside so maybe this is why the compressor is running continually, but after this time it should only start when the temps go above their set operating temp range and then turn off once they've reached it.

Also the refrigerator should enter the auto defrost cycle approx once every 8-10 hours to auto defrost the evaporator unit in the freezer. During the defrost cycle both the compressor and the evaporator fan are turned off. The defrost cycle lasts for about 20-25 minutes. Then the compressor and evap fan are turned on again to get the temps back to their set operating range

When the "noise" occurs try opening a door (either one) and check if the noise stops. If it does it is the evaporator fan as the compressor (and the condenser fan if running) do not stop when a door is opened but the evaporator fan does so as to prevent cold air being blown out the door. It will start again when the door is closed.

If the refrigerator is still under warranty get it checked out under warranty and don't void the warranty by trying to fix it yourself.

It does not stop when opening doors but it is louder when opening the (bottom) freezer. Thanks. I have put in a service call and they can come in a week. I'm just thankful it is cooling. I wonder what people do if their new fridge stops working at all.

If it is new then it should be covered by the manufacturer's warranty.

Warranty service (if warranty period is still valid) should be the first option people should think of.

That's what warranties are for.

Yeah I know that's what warranties are for. I wanted some opinions as to what could be wrong so I could discuss the possibilities with the technician when he comes. I have a fear they will try to say it's normal as long as it's cooling.

Since it is new, things may have changed but it is unusual that the evaporator fan (not the condenser fan) keeps running when a door is opened.

If the compressor is still running continually and if the temps seem OK (use a thermometer and check both the freezer and the refrigerator i.e. 0F and 37F) this is not right. The compressor should be stopped by the control board

We’re having the same issue and as one of you commented, we had a GE tech come out and said it was normal. So 2 more weeks have gone by and unless someone has a fix for this I’ll be calling GE tomorrow. This is like torture listening to this any time we sit down for a meal.

Another one here. And yes -- it's TORTURE!!!

I'll put in a new motherboard today and see if that helps.

Please let us know if it helps. At this point we're just used to the noise. As long as it cools right. But I'm afraid it's going to get worse and cause problems.

All FIXED! The problems were a 'revving' fan noise, which was loudest in the bottom freezer compartment (evaporator fan), and ice maker failure. New board fixed both. Very easy replacement process. I can't believe you have tolerated that noise since at least Dec 4, 22; your pain threshold is WELL above mine!

I have the same noise on my brand new French door refrigerator with ice maker on the one door. Steve, did you have a technician come and install the new mother board? Is this issue related to the chip shortage for appliances?

Looks like I’m going to be part of this unfortunate club.I bought one last & sometimes it’ll catch me off guard as I’m walking by & scare the beejesus outta me.Thank you all.Because of all your sacrifices & the pain you’ve had to endure,I'll be able to stand firm against the technician’s denial & insist it’s the motherboard & I won’t take it anymore ,I want a new motherboard
