Nitro 5 refuses to turn off on after charge.

I have this model of the nitro 5 and the entire computer is bricked, no signs of life, the charging light won’t turn on when plugged in, the fans don’t turn on when I press the button, I know it isn’t the power supply and nothing seems to be working, no obvious blown capacitors or anything like that, nothing seems to work. Please can someone try helping me?

Hi Fionn,

Okay, it sounds like there's no power whatsoever to your laptop. Do you have a voltmeter and know how to use it? That would be an invaluable aid in figuring out what's going on with your Nitro. First thing I'd do is to measure the voltage output from the AC adapter just to be sure it's working; start from the basics and work our way up.

The Acer support forum has a couple of articles on what to do if your laptop won't turn on; both of them basically say that you have to make sure to push the power plug in all the way - you should hear a click when it's engaged, and the battery light should come on.

Since you've already reported there aren't any blown capacitors, you know how to open it up. The next step is to make sure the motherboard is getting the power from the power supply. Open up the bottom case and turn the laptop upside down with the power cord plugged in. Let's measure the voltage at the motherboard to see that power is getting there to verify the connector is working.

Here's a picture of the bare connector; the arrow points to the contact that should be the positive voltage.

There will be a single pin on the rear of the connector going straight down to the motherboard; that'll be the positive voltage input. You can use the case of the jack for ground; measure the DC voltage between those two points and verify it matches what you read on the tip of the power jack. You might try wiggling the connector and see if it's loose or has any play; sometimes the solder joints fail and you get a bad connection that can be fixed by reflowing the solder.

Give those things a try and let us know what you find; after that we'll know more and can figure out what to do next to bring your machine back to life.

Okay, so I’ve tried checking for voltage, and the power supply gives voltage, but the jack doesn’t. But I do have note that it did spark at me so that could be part of the issue. I will try ordering a replacement jack and see if that helps fix the issue. Thanks so much for helping me get to the issue. I will reply again if ordering the new part doesn’t fix the problem.

@fusion_tech, That's actually good news; if you have some reasonable soldering skills, it shouldn't be a difficult job. I've had to do the same repair on a couple of my grandchildren's computers, so that's one of the first things I check.

I'll be looking forward to hearing back from you one way or the other.

Again, thanks.
