How to use external display on a MBP with cracked screen?

Hi,

I bought a MBP A1989 on ebay. The screen is cracked (the screen is black), but the MBP works because I hear the chimes. Unfortunately, when I plug my external screen with HDMI cable via usb-c port (I used every usb-c port on mac), I see nothing on my external screen.

All I can say is that keyboard works, if I press caps lock I have the green light ON. I have nothing on the touch bar (it's completely black) and I don't know how to turn off the MBP (without seeing what's on screen) and try SMC / NVRAM PRAM reset.

Please help me :) Thanks !

This is an issue I have run into time and time again. If you bought it on eBay and it was not wiped by the seller, chances are there is still a user account in it and Filevault is turned on. Typically I don't have great luck getting it to display out in these cases without logging into the account.

The touchbar may be blank because that's normal when the device is turned on, but Filevault is enabled and the disk is still locked (encrypted).

Putting it in "clamshell mode" is a good start, but I have even had issues with Macs doing that unless you do a specific dance and say a prayer to the Apple deities. And hope real hard.

You should be able to power it off by pressing and holding the touch ID/power button for about 15 seconds. See what happens if you power off that way and then try to put it in recovery mode (press and hold cmd and R right after you press the power button). If it will go into recovery mode, the external monitor may light up grey and the touchbar should have an ESC button on it. At that point try closing the lid and use external mouse and keyboard.

Hi Alisha, thanks a lot for your answer :) I've tried but, nothing happened... no "esc" button and the external monitor (I've also tried my tv... I've heard that some Dell monitors have problems with macs) didn't light up grey (it says "no signal"). There is still hope... I suppose... i've heard a chimes when plug in my dock (or plug the power chord). As I said, I have another screen (same model) that should work (it's from another MBP which had been so lucky to have been poured with coffee from someone...), but if I can't do step 1 here 2018款MacBook Pro 13英寸带触控栏版本屏幕更换指南) I suppose that it could be "dangerous" for mac and, eventually, for me :D

Edit: it seems that the battery is 0%, now even if I push touch id / power button, I can't hear the chimes. Maybe I could try the "replace the screen" option. What do you think, it's a bad idea ?

@kettyn Step 1 is a great precautionary measure. But to be honest, even Apple's documentation does not include this step. And I personally don't do it. Ever. It's purely to prevent the machine from accidentally getting powered on before you can get the battery disconnected. I would absolutely give it a go regardless of your inability to do that.

Thanks @flannelist ! I suppose that is the last thing to test.... this weekend I'll do that. My first MBP was a MBP 2011 with dedicated GPU problem (it worked great with a little mod ;) ), now I use MBA mid 2012 that works great with monterey (even if it's not supported ;) )... this MBP seems to be my biggest challenge :( Fingers crossed, hope to make it works again... even if it seems difficult. But if I could see again what's on screen, maybe we'll can do something ! thanks :)

Hi Alisha! Sorry, I've had a lot of things to do... I've changed the screen and... it works ! The MBP was without OS ! So... cracked screen + no OS, hard to make it work again ;) Now, it has high sierra and I'll update to the last OS supported... and we'll see ! Thanks a lot for your help ! Have a nice day ;)

What happens when you use an external keyboard & mouse and closing the display lid?

I bet you'll find the external works then!

I have a dock with hdmi / ethernet / 2 usb3 and 1 usb c + charging usb c. I should use it with usb keyboard and mouse + external screen ? Someone told me that it could be gpu... i hope not :(

And why the touchbar is not powering on ? I also have another mbp screen (that is not cracked and it should be working), but it's a little dangerous, I can't do step 1 (2018款MacBook Pro 13英寸带触控栏版本屏幕更换指南) as I can't see what's on screen :( Anyway, I'm gonna test what you said... thanks and... i'll tell you if it worked :)

Edit : I've tried, nothing happend... my Dell s2721qs doesn't detect MBP A1989
