1 How can you tell the difference between A1706 and A1989 screens?
I’m going to replace the display on my A1706 and I have various screens, but they’re not labeled. Is there any visible identifiers or markings so I know how to differentiate the two?

The is not visible label. All you have to do is couple the screen, A1989 will display well but the Webcam wont work.

There's often a QR with a code written on the same label, that doesnt seem to be there on a third party LCD (or assemblys) and theres always a Apple OE number on the back side of the Tcon board approx area were the FPC connector sits on the forward facing side on the TCON board, here's more about compability;
