Possibly fried iPhone6 board component

Hello everyone,

I had a question and was unsure wether or not to open a new thread or append to a similar thread. Had repaired my iPhones like dozens of times in the past.

My current iPhone6 Model A1586 had vertical stripes resembling white noise this morning; restarting didn't help. I presumed a cable was loose, so I opened it up, unplugged and reattached all cables leading to the display.

After that, I tried turning the thing back on and the stripes were still there. I repeated the process once (unplugging and replugging relevant display cables), but then the display stayed completely black. Since I did not order a replacement display yet, I first wanted to determine wether or not the display was broken or the phone itself.

Several options:

  1. Some cable was about to give out, after opening up, the relevant cables power line broke completely.
  2. Something in the board broke, GPU or whatever.
  3. My attempt to fix it may have shorted something out on the board (either the display had a short circuit or the cables were inproperly reconnected.
  4. Something else.

To determine wether the iPhone6 was still okay, I unplugged the Display completely and turned the phone on. I presume the iPhone should still start and vibrate once. The battery should still be about 86% full. What I then did was:

  1. I turned the iPhone off, unplugged the battery. Display was disconnected.
  2. Waited 30 seconds. Turned the side lever to 'silent/vibrate'.
  3. reconnected the battery and tried turning it on.
  4. Plugged the power cord in. tried turning on again.
  5. Phone did not vibrate, while the side lever was on 'silent'

Shouldn't it at least vibrate with the display being disconnected? Am I correct to assume the board is fried? I would refrain from ordering a new display and buy an Android Phone instead, if the thing is no longer repairable.

The phone was turned off during every step above, but I am not sure I may have forgotten to unplug the battery one time. What's the worst that could happen unplugging and reconnecting cables while the battery is still connected (while the mobile is off)? Would it be possible to save the data somehow, if the GPU was fried or whatever?

Just a side comment:

I had backups of the phone years ago, but iTunes keept crashing on updates or whenever I tried reinstalling it. So there haven't been backups in years and it would be pretty good if there was any way to repair the thing or at least save the data from the board.

I studied Computer Sciences and am quiet adept with electronics, but iTunes was just hopeless to fix on my PCs. Is it possible to transfer the memory chip to another phone?

I finally managed to get it back working.

Apparently the statement in another thread of the iPhone being able to start with just the mainboard and the battery was misleading. It stated the iPhone would still turn on, even if the display assembly was disconnected.

Since the phone did not vibrate and not show any other signs when trying to turn it back on, I had assumed the mainboard got fried.

After replacing the display, the phone seems to be able to boot without problems.

Hi

It’s most likely the screen as the GPU failing is extremely rare

But to confirm this I would try using it in a external display through airplay or a wired connection

Some displays go bad on their own some need a drop overall they are extremely fragile

To use Airplay or a wired connection, those things would have to be turned on first, which seems extremly hard with a black screen :)

Also I expected the thing to be bricked, since it did not vibrate when trying to turn it on with a disconnected display.

But I managed to at least get it working again (although with the initial problem of the distorted image with the white-noise vertical stipes). I replugged the screen after cleaning the contacts, warmed up the phone a bit, reconnected the battery and tried to start it.

I hope it was just dirt in between the connectors short circuiting them and preventing the boot or something.

I made a full backup of the phone in iTunes, saved all pics to my NAS and hope to get it back working with a new display this weekend. I just hope there is no fried capacitor or something on the board causing the stripes.
