Mobile Data in settings shows Error

My iPhoneXs is unable to connect with mobile network services. In the settings an error is displayed. Mobile data is greyed out in the quick settings menu.

WiFi, GPS and bluetooth work perfectly fine.

Anyone knows how to fix that?

If it is showing error in the Cellular field, more often than not this indicates an issue with baseband hardware in the phone. Check under settings > general > about to see if any data is missing. For example, Modem firmware, or IMEI. If all data is present I might try a network settings reset. (It's under settings > general> Reset - no data will be removed, but you will have to reconnect any previously known bluetooth devices or wifi networks. If that doesn't work, see if there is an update and install it if there is on. Just back up before you do it and be aware that this sort of issue can actually be more complicated following an update. It may try to reactivate or contact Apple's servers over cellular following the update and if that fails, you won't be able to get past the activation screen to access any of the information on the phone.

If data is missing in the about section, it's possible there's an issue with your board. It's something I have seen not infrequently on the XS and it typically ends up being a board related issue. In which case you would likely need someone to take a look at the board. Baseband is a tricky fault to fix because there is so much on a cell phone which is related to cellular functions.

Unfortunately this is exactly what happened. I am familiar with "component repairs" but board repairs are not for me.

How is the prognosis when I bring the device to a store for a repair?

@bvonr It is difficult to say. The iPhone XS (and any iPhone newer than the X save the XR and the SE 2020/2022) has a logic board that is made up of 2 boards, sandwiched on top of one another, with an interposer board between.

The entire bottom board is dedicated to various RF functions. So this could be something like there's been a drop, or a bend in the phone at some point, which caused the communication between the 2 boards to be severed. It could also be a fault in any number of the components related to cellular function. (There are a lot). Some shops will resolve this sort of error by just swapping in a known good bottom board (transferring over whatever components are necessary from your phone to the new board).

Regardless, You would want to make sure you were taking it to some place that could do board level repairs.

What are typical prices I’ll be charged? The phone was in perfect shape however spending the 500 bucks apple will request for an entire replacement is just nonsense.

@bvonr I honestly couldn't tell you for sure. It would depend on where you take it. Some shops won't even work on "No Service" boards because they can be a total time sink due to the number of factors involved. But I would expect to pay probably a couple hundred dollars anyways. It theoretically should be less expensive than an Apple swap, otherwise there's no value for you as the customer. But it still will likely not be an inexpensive repair.

If an update is required, go get an update.

I decided to restore the phone. This actually completely broke the device, as I am not able to activate the iPhone now. If you have a way around the activation process I would appreciate if you let me know.

@bvonr No there is no way around it. You didn't check if there is IMEI and baseband version when troubleshooting cellular issues?

I did check it now. Right now it only gives me a serial number. No IMEI or baseband number at all (remember that I can access this data only from the inactivated state by clicking the little „i“ at the bottom right corner pre activation…

@bvonr IMEI is required during activation for a "phone" or "cellular" type of device, there is no way around it and even if there is, the phone is not useable for any cellular or Apple services afterwards.

What you need to do is finding out why the baseband fails to boot and talk to the phone OS. This is a board diagnosis and repair only possible by trained professionals.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanations. Whole problem makes sense for me now.
