Compatability with 16TB External SSD Enclosures

I have tried 3 USB 3.0 to MSATA external SSDs.

None will allow me to format them (8TB & 16TB).

I formated one of the 16TB on a PC but when I connected to my early 2015 13" MacBook Pro Retina it first saw the external SSD, but then was lost and cannot write to it.

Is the MacBook Pro (A1502) compatible with external MSATA SSD drives?

If not, is there anything I can do so that my MacBook Pro can read and write to these drives?

From the sounds of it you used a Windows file system which has its own quirks!

What is the disk format? MBR or GUID? And the file system Windows :FAT or NTFS and for Mac: HFS+ or APFS?

Apples file systems (which require GUID) go to the exabyte level so I can't see you having any issues within OS-X or macOS natively using HFS+ or APFS.

SATA or mSATA have no bearing here as that's just the physical interface at the drive level.

What is the your plan here? As you appear to be dancing between platforms.

I took it to a PC and was able to format it (NTFS). Then when I got home and plugged it into my MacBook it saw the drive, but when I tried to write to it it dissappeared and the Mac could not see it.

Can my Mac format an MSATA USB 3.0 external SSD?

@bobaz - Yes you can!! Just not using NTFS as Mac's can't write to that volume type only read. You need to use the correct lower level structure GUID and either HFS+ or APFS. My preference is HFS+ as its more compatible with older OS-X and even Windows when using the needed OS extension.

But before you go down this path it would be helpful understanding where you are heading. Again, you appear to be dancing between different OS's, if that's the plan then there are better ways.

I tried formating on my Mac, but EVERY option I chose failed.

I even did 2-pass and it failed.

I tried: APFS with GUID, Master Boot & Apple Partition.

They ALL failed.

So why can't I format this external SSD?

I don't have HFS+ and APFS fails. So what do I do?

Either the drives are bad or you have a problem with the case/cable connection.

So who's drives are you using? Make and models. Are they new or used?

What is the case and cable connection? Did you try a second case/cable setup? Are you using a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) rated case? What is your cable connection USB or Thunderbolt?

I will try some other cables.

The cables are USB C on enclosure side and USB 2 or 3 (flat rectanle) on the laptop side.

I plug it into the laptop port not through a multi port dock.
