8Gigs of ram working or not?

Hello,

My question related to the pre unibody macbook pro's (the 4.1, which is the last of the non-unibody macbook pro's) is if it is possible to stack 8 Gigabytes of ram in it. Currently I have placed an SSD in it and have 4GB of ram. With an upgrade to 8GB I think it should be able to "keep up" for the next couple of years for me. And since memory is much cheaper (even though it is DDR2) than the time I chose to upgrade to four I wanted to know if it was possible.

Back "then" I found multiple topics stating that only 6 gigabytes of ram was possible. However since then Apple seems to have release a new firmware update which made is possible for some Macbook Pro's.

One topic I could find regarding this question is: Why is the maximum amount of ram available only 6Gb?

Even though some people with 8GB of ram in their MBP have some odd issues (overheating, being slower than before). I was wondering if this would be still the case, also when you are running Lion? Because the persons who had the problem there were running Snow Leopard.

I hope someone can clarify this. I really would like to have the 8GB of ram so my MBP wil be really snappy again even when running virtual machine's on it.

I would contact hixatchi from macrumors about the brand and model of RAM used. They seemed excited to show but not to tell or share how they did such a feat. Best I know the screen shots could have come from a virtual machine and not an actual laptop

Hi, According to Mactracker your computer is still limited to 6GB of memory. IIRC the MBP's that can handle 8GB are newer models with different CPU's.

I have found this link somewhere in the deep ends of the internet. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.p... Where someone with an 4.1 says that he actually is running 8GB. With screenshots.

The CPU of the 4.1 is the same as the 5.1 if I am not mistaken. (Penryn 2.4GHZ)

Here is a link to the firmware update you are referencing. Note it gives specific computers the update will work on. If yours is not one of those the update won't do what you want. Note the artical states the computer MUST be 5.1 for this to work.
