iPhone reboots after battery replacement

Hi guys,

so I decided to replace the battery of my iPhone SE (2016). Now it shuts down every few minutes and restarts. Other than that there are no real disturbances in using it, so I guess the logic board is fine.

When I connect it to my mac, iTunes still finds it and everything. But when I open coconutbattery, coconutbattery crashes. However, when I checked it with coconutbattery in the beginning of the repair (don’t remember whether it was the first or second time i had plugged the battery in), it worked fine and I could see the battery-data. Since then, no chance. (It worked with coconutbattery, before I glued the battery in)

Also its not really charging and dangling around somewhere between 7-9% charge.

Is this a faulty battery? Or something else? I read in another post about someone who had damaged something called an „SMD-part“. What are these and could it be something like this?

This could definitely be a bad battery, but could also be the result of damaging some SMD components (that's just a blanket term for the tiny little bits on the board, stands for Surface Mount Device). The SE and 5S in particular are especially prone to this. There are some very tiny resistors next to the battery connector that it is very easy to knock loose when you disconnect the battery. The ones often affected are used for battery "gas gauge" functions. By which I mean, they are involved in the transmission of data regarding how charged the battery is. So if they are missing, the phone cannot really tell how much charge is left in the battery. So it will shut down because it think it's empty. And it may also not charge properly.

These tiny little guys are located in this area (I will upload more specifics when i get home, and can screen grab a board view). But you can see why they might be easy to damage if you used a pry tool of some kind to disconnect the battery. But see if you can get a clear look in that area, check if anything seems loose or shows signs of being missing.

Thanks!! Are the SMD-parts fixable? Are they the little silver things on the right side on the connector?

For some reason, sometimes the wifi option is greyed out too for a bit, after a reboot after a "crash"... could this also be a symptom? (after a bit it can be turned on again)

@carl_jfischer Yup. Those are the ones. There should be 4 little tiny guys in total. And the bottom 2 are the ones to be concerned about.

Not sure about WiFi though. Those components are all up near the display connectors. I don't even think the antenna near the battery connector is for WiFi at all, just cell signal.

Also. The SMD components are fixable. You just need to find someone who can solder components that small. It's a fairly straightforward repair for anyone with those skills.
