B Button Not Working GBC

Hello friends, I recently bought a pretty beat up Gameboy Color to do a mod on. This isn’t my first mod, and I was excited to put a more modern screen into the GBC. Before I got the parts for the mod I took apart the GBC and cleaned it up, including the board. The rubber membranes were pretty beat up, it seems someone played this GBC a ton. The B button wasn’t working when I first tested before cleaning, so I knew the contacts on the board would need to be cleaned up to ensure better button presses. After cleaning, I put it back together and found that the B button still wasn’t working. I ordered new rubber membranes and cleaned the contacts several more times with IPS to make sure they were extra clean. However, with the new rubber membranes the B button still isn’t working. I don’t know what else I can do to the contact. I lightly scraped at the contact thinking there may be residue from the old rubber membrane, but that hasn’t worked either. Does anyone have ideas of what else can be done?

The traces on the PCB could be messed up. Try going in there with a multimeter and testing the continuity between the button contact and the test point. The test point for the B button is the one directly above the "WR" label (pin 3) of the cartridge socket.

Hi

At the moment your best shot is tho get a upclose look at the board around where the B button sits and look for a broken trace and then repair it, i would also keep a eye out for loose connections on the bigger chips with the metal legs sticking out of them,to test the connections get a thin tool and very very very carefully tap the side of all the individual legs to make sure they are solid (if they are loose they will move and you need to solder them back down or run a jumper wire to the leg if necessary)

I would use this video as a guide on spotting broken traces and how to fix them

Just as a heads up: this sort of repair isn’t the easiest for beginners in soldering so if you aren’t comfortable doing the repair I would take it to a repair shop that’s reputable to have it done

Let me know if you can’t find a broken trace or a loose connection

Hopefully this helps

Any questions please ask

Thanks:-)
