SSD not showing up / not recognized

Hi!

I have 2 similar A1708 macbooks, one without any SSD and the other with the genuine apple 512gb ssd.

Yesterday i tried swapping the ssd from the one that was working properly (due to lcd fault anymore) and putting it into the other one.

The surprise was that couldn’t recognize it at all.

I tried in recovery mode and also looking it up in utility or terminal but same issue.

Then, i just placed it back on its initial macbook and it showed up the same issue.

I did reseted the NVRAM as per apple’s instructions but still, no luck.

Any ideas what could be done? (Idon’t think the ssd died just from beeing removed)

The version of macOS the given system has a bearing here. One of your systems might still be running macOS 10.12.5 (Sierra) which was the last version of macOS which used HFS+ and your other system is using MacOS 10.13 or newer which uses AFS. So the given systems firmware doesn’t have the needed update to boot up under AFS.

To overcome this you’ll need to re-install your OS to allow the installer to update the systems firmware. You can do this using Internet Recovery or using a bootable OS installer drive setup from another Mac with the OS version you want to use (I recommend you upgrade to Mojave 10.14.x as its better than High Sierra 10.13.x)

When i try to do that through internet recovery, it just not showing up any disk to install.

@stefanmf - Yes! That can happen as the version of macOS recovery is offering you is the older one which doesn't know about AFS which your disk is setup with!

Time to build a bootable OS installer:

Download the version you want of macOS from here How to get old versions of macOS You will need to get the installer file so the newest versions will aim you to th App Store which won't help you. Best to just get Mojave and then upgrade from there.

Next you need a USB-C drive (or at last one that offers USB-A connection as well at USB-C if your other system needs that) format the drive using Disk Utility to GUID and a journaled file system (thats what the install needs to be bootable. Then follow this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Mojave installer drive

Once done you should be able to then install the needed OS for your system to recognize the drive

So all good until here, both are thunderbolts so type C.

I will create a bootable installer of Mojave in short time, but how can i format the disk if doesn't even show up?

The issue is that, exactly this ssd is from the psrticular mentioned macbook with the latest macos installed (directly on that macbook)

@stefanmf - Your systems firmware first needs to be upgraded for the system to boot up under the other drive. Using the installer will allow you to update the systems firmware.

This assume's you are using a good drive and its properly installed.

@danj , i tried that yesterday.

Bought a 16GB USB + adaptor from type C to usb.. made a bootable mojave and the macbooks still don't recognize even the usb..

I have A1708 too and had similar problems. This is caused by oxidation on contacts. You should clean both SSD and the board connector. Isopropyl alcohol and a soft eraser will do. Please follow steps of the following guide: https://dragonsgaming.wordpress.com/2012...
