Keyboard is disconnecting after a while

Hi! So I’ve got a mechanical keyboard (Redragon Andromeda, nothing too fancy) that I have been using for the past 4 years with no problems. A few months ago it started crashing from time to time and I am unable to type anything on it, but the keys are still all lit. After a restart, everything goes back to normal, but sometimes the fix only lasts 10 minutes and the keyboard crashes again.

Today I gave up and replaced the keyboard with some Genius membrane keyboard that I had lying around. I plugged it in after my Redragon died again and nothing. The new keyboard was not working. I restarted the PC and now it works and has not died yet, but I fear that will happen soon.

So this must be a computer problem, not a keyboard or port/cable one. What can I do?

Hi @dan37,

You said “……. not a keyboard or port/cable one” so did you try a different USB port or even a few, in case they were connected to the same USB controller? I’m not sure as you didn’t specifically mention that you did.

I realize that you said that the keys are still lit but check that the power management setting for the keyboard in Device Manager that says “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is disabled or unchecked.

Go to Device Manager - Keyboards - click on the > symbol to the left of the category name to expand the list - right click on the keyboard device entry - Properties - Power Management - checkbox marked “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”

To get to Device Manager press the Win key and the x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link

Hi @jayeff, thank you for your comment.

Yes, I have tried multiple back and front USB ports and the issue persisted. I have checked the power management tab and the checkbox is unticked vor all the entries (I have one KB, obviously, but for some reason "HID Keyboard Device" appears 5 times, along with my mouse which appears in both Keyboards and Mice.

I have switched back to my mechanical since yesterday and had no issues so far, but that doesn't help me figure out what can be the problem.

Edit: it has died on me 1 hour after posting the comment, but I noticed a strange pattern (might just be me): I feel like it dies after using it for a little while after not using it. So if I take a break from using it and then come back to type something, it works and then dies shortly after. Maybe it dies if nothing happens with the PC (mouse movement, games, videos, etc.), could that make sense?

Hi @dan37

Check that the USB Selective Suspend setting option is disabled.

Go to Control Panel > Power Options > click on "Change when the computer sleeps" > "change advanced power settings" > USB settings > USB selective suspend > if it shows enabled click on it and select disabled > Apply. Restart the PC in the normal manner and check if it still occurs.

If it is enabled this won't affect the USB keyboard or USB mouse as long as you have the Wake from Keyboard/Mouse option enabled in BIOS. If you have such a setting and it is not enabled then USB selective suspend if enabled will affect the keyboard/mouse.

Maybe something to look at.

Quick way to get to Power Options is to type Control Panel in the search box on the desktop and then click on the Power Options link under the Control panel app that appears.

Another thing to try is to start the PC in safe mode and check if it occurs. If it doesn't then it is a driver problem. Have you checked if the USB drivers are up to date? Also perhaps the BIOS software.

I have disabled that option, so far the keyboard did not crash today. I will come back to this thread if the issue persists. Thank you!

Hi again @jayeff , so the keyboard died 3 times in the past week, which is not terrible, but it's clear that the issue has not been solved. Do you happen to know any other possible fixes I could try?

Hi @dan37

You said "I have one KB . . . "HID Keyboard Device" appears 5 times, along with my mouse which appears in both Keyboards and Mice."

Just on the off chance, have you tried, from Device manager, uninstalling all of the above devices, same with USB drivers, as @jayeff has suggested, and then rebooting.

Just to eliminate any possible driver issues. You never know until you try.

Another thought is using a PS/2 adapter (quite cheap - people often have them kicking around with sundry computer parts) with the USB keyboard so system thinks it is a PS/2 keyboard.
