Any idea what acc.sensors and gyros used in the Galaxy? Where are they placed?

On the galaxy nexus, the left sensor next to the ear piece is to turn off the screen while in a call.
What is the sensor to the right of it, just to the left of the front camera?
Also will it hurt to cover these with a screen protector?
