I have a ASUS laptop that i have been using for years with no problem. For no absolute reason the headset that i use has a microphone (the SteelSeries Arctis 3 ) and it has been working well, now the laptop only detects the headset as an output with no input, which means that i am not detecting the headset microphone that i intend to use, which is a bad thing because i use it a lot for calls.

If the microphone is not being detected in Control Panel, try opening the laptop and check if the audio board cable is securely seated and if so check the audio jack for continuity between the jack input and the audio board.
To test for continuity, disconnect the cable that connects the audio board(supplier example only) and connect the headset into the jack and then use an Ohmmeter and check if it can measure the microphone and the speakers on the jack’s board connection pins.
Here’s a teardown video for the laptop. At 3:48 minutes you can see the audio combo jack and the board cable etc.
Note: It is advisable to disconnect the battery from the systemboard as soon as it is accessible after opening the laptop. You don’t have to remove it, simply disconnect it. There is always power at certain points on the systemboard, even when the laptop is switched off. The power button is not a power isolating button. Its function is to signal the intentions of the user. Having the battery disconnected means that there won’t be any electrical problems if you accidentally slip when using tools etc. mechanical damage is another matter however ;-)
Also wearing a wrist strap connected to earth will help to avoid any ESD damage, if you touch something that you shouldn’t

What is the model number of the laptop?
Just verifying that you checked the settings in Control Panel > Sound > Recording to see if the microphone is detected?
If so can you use another headset to verify that your headset is still OK?

What is the model number of the laptop?
If it is a faulty combo jack, then knowing the model number will help to find the correct replacement part.

First off, congratulations for making your Asus last that long. In my opinion most don't make it beyond 6 months. I call them Walmart Brand.
Anyway the port in your Asus is probably worn. If your jack works on other devices but not the Ausus I would say it's the Asus port. Try another microphone if you can beg, borrow, buy or steal one
