What's the purpose of the rubber hinge screw covers on my MacBook Pro?
My MBP works fine without them.
They are wedge blocks which are needed! Please put them back in.
There function is to help prevent the uppercase from failing as overtime the constant stress of the clutch hinges will fatigue the metal causing it to crack. These blocks help transmit some of the twisting stress to the bottom cover.
Lets use a mind model to see why they are needed you have four pieces of wood which you create a square nailing the boards to gather. Now you put one side on the floor and the other end up pressing exactly straight down the wood can support the load. Now lets say the load shifts along the woods axis slightly what happens? The side pieces can’t support the weight and the structure collapses! Now lets start again but this time let’s add a fifth piece of wood that transects across the bottom to top opposing corners. Now applying that slip stress either presses against the board or the board is being stretched in either case the structure is able to support the weight load!
Thats what these wedges do spreads the load!

That explains it. But how are they supposed to fit on the hinge screws? Are they supposed to fit tightly (like they snap in place) or is it fine if they're fit loosely but are in place?
While your explanation is solid, I wonder if you have any sources? Any from Apple would be especially good.
They are lightly glued to the hinge to hold them in place when you put the bottom cover on. Once the cover is secured the blocks are locked in by the keying they have around the screws.
The source is there use by design and seeing the effect when they were forgotten!
It's best to stick with what the designer built. Rarely do I try to second guess what a team of top flight designers have created.
