Aftermarket head unit only works when key is in ACC position.

Replaced an ancient aftermarket head unit with a Rockville RDM18. Works great on ACC, but shuts off on start and when it comes back on and reconnects to my phone there is no sound from the speakers. Ive switched modes to see if it was a Bluetooth issue,but it doesnt seem to matter. Using a Multimeter i checked my ignition switch to see if my key was returning to the ACC 2 position properly and i get the proper readings in all positions. Aside from installing a fuse jack in a continuous power slot and running a power wire with a switch to the head unit, is there anything i can do? Besides not being a cheap bastard and buying anything but rockville next time, that is…

Hi,

Just verifying that there are two power feeds connected to the head unit, one from the Ignition ACC (red wire in head unit wire harness) and the other via an inline fuse (yellow wire in head unit wire harness) connected to the battery?

Hi,

I can only think that there is a problem with the head unit.

Here’s an image from the 1998-2002 Honda Accord service repair manual showing the factory wiring for the radio.

As long as the power is being supplied to the appropriate connections on the radio there is no reason why it shouldn’t work, unless perhaps the accessories relay is flicking when starting and this may be causing a problem in the radio.

It seems that you are not the only one experiencing this particular problem with the head unit. Two reviewers in this link experienced the same problem -scroll down to comments for April 13 2021 and April 22 2021. Maybe there was a bad batch.

If possible try for a refund as there is a 1 year warranty, 90 day money back return incl. shipping on the unit.

Correct. One red for 12v accessory, one yellow w/inline fuse. One black ground, one blue remote amp(unused, no amp in car) then 8 speaker wires... Though the yellow w/fuse comes from the wiring harness, it is a constant power(multimeter tested)
