MacBook 2017 parts for a MacBook 2016

Hi all,

i own a 2016 MacBook and the system itself is going good. However the screen is showing some wear and the keyboard is starting to melt (to be expected).
i found a MacBook 2017 for parts (motherboard failure).
how feasible would a full transplant be? Moving the 2016 motherboard to the 2017 body (keeping the 2017 battery)

let me know what you think, thanks!

Honestly, this is probably fine. I have found stories of other people doing this online in reverse for upgrade purposes (put a 2017 board in a 2016 housing) The 2016 and 2017 models are extremely similar (I tried cross referencing part numbers for the Apple components, but of course they’re different, doesn’t mean it’s not compatible though) and all the connector placement looks identical, the logic board replacement procedures are even lumped together in Apple’s documentation. I was hoping to find some technical documentation to compare some connectors and such, but all the places I’ve looked essentially say to use the 2016 board as a reference for the 2017. So I would hazard you’re in the clear. If it was a 2015, that wouldn’t be the case. But I would be curious to know how you make out.

Please note these 12” machines are sort of tempermental and I can’t stand working on them because the internal layout is a disaster. So be patient and take your time.

Thanks! I will try to get the price down a bit and I might pull the trigger!

While initially I want to say that swapping boards would cause all kinds of issue and/or cause havoc, the logic boards appear physically just about the same and half the component list per iFixIt is the same….that said I cannot advise even attempting this as while I’m totally curious if it would work personally, professionally I would be seriously concerned of it bricking the device.

Below are the logic boards from both the Retina MacBook 2016 and 2017 from iFixIt’s teardowns:

If you’re truly devoted to that 2017 donor, and I could understand to a degree due to the surprising price of Apple replacement parts, I would first wonder if the screen and keyboard fit and work within the older 2016. I would honestly be surprised it both didn’t have some physical difference preventing it or if the hardware simply didn’t work with the 2016 drivers.

Apple hardware isn’t my specialty and something like this is a question only a very experienced Apple tech who has done some wild tinkering would likely be able to answer, but I expect it would not work or be safe for the machine, unfortunately.

Regardless, best of luck.

Thanks! No hard core devotion. I just found a good deal and I was thinking of it as an opportunity to get a new (better) screen/keyboard/battery. I saw the motherboard layout as pretty much identical, which is why I asked the question.
