Battery drains immediately after connecting to iPod

I am trying to repair a 6th gen iPod touch for a friend, the battery seemed to be degrading for awhile before it completely quit working.

When I attached the new battery it drained to 0v almost immediately, ( I tested it before soldering it on and it was at 3.8v ) without powering the device on.

I tried hooking it up to a power supply and it would pull 1 amp without even reaching a volt.

Is there any hope for the device or the files on it?
