hi, I have an alienware 15 r4 that will not power on. I was given it so havent used it yet. I know its the gtx 1060 6gb version but not alot more. The power adapter works as i have another laptop i have tried this in. everything looks in good condition inside im unsure where to start with repairing.

Does the laptop show that it is charging when the adapter is connected?
What happens, if anything when you try to turn it on e.g. fans on, lights if any, on keyboard etc?
Try what is known as a flea power release and check if that resolves the problem.
Here’s the service manual for the laptop. Go to p.87 to see the procedure. Basically it entails disconnecting the power adapter if connected and then removing the base cover and disconnecting the battery cable and then holding the laptop’s Power button operated for 5-10 seconds to drain any residual power from the laptop.
Reverse the procedure and then try to start the laptop.
This will restore the laptop BIOS back to its factory default settings in case they were corrupted and preventing a normal start

I have tried this, with no change.
when the power button is pressed nothing happens. no lights no fans nothing. I have taken the back off and tried this. I have also tested the power connector for the laptop to the motherboard (i removed this first). Between the single brown cable and all the reds getting 18.4 volts. Between all the red and black cables getting 19.2 volts. So I believe this is working.
motherboard looks good with no damage.

No lights on when the charger is connected is not good.
There should be a charging light at least.
So that's the first thing to look for i.e. why isn't there one.
It may be if there is a power problem the battery has become depleted so coupled with a power problem it won't show anything.
What is the motherboard's board number?
Found this schematic for a Alienware 17 R4 but that doesn't mean that it is applicable for your model.
On p.4 there is a table with all the voltage rails that are on when the AC adapter is connected. You may have to start in this fashion to see which ones have the power and which ones don't.
The motherboard may look good but that doesn't mean that it is.

ive been told its likely a short circuit on the power bus. ive checked all connections but cant find anything, checked voltage in as many places as possible. there was no power to the battery, one of the pins were bent, straightened out put the whole thing back together and still nothing.

What is the motherboard's make and model number (printed on the motherboard)?
As suggested before, you would need the correct schematic to start chasing board level faults.
