I also have this problem that just started occurring. Also the screen goes black and I have to reset the camera. I am looking into a company called Camera Repair Center to send to for repair. Did anyone find a solution other than sending it in?

Don’t know the answer but here’s the service manual for the camcorder. Be patient as it takes a little while to go from processing to Download after you have passed the security check and clicked on Go to Download below the document preview box.
Check what error codes (if any) are stored in the camcorder and see if that helps to further isolate what the problem is. Go to p.17/130 (pdf page numbering) or Sect.1. Trouble Shooting to see where to find the codes in the menus and also what they mean.

I had the same issue and it was the flex connector that connects the lens assembly to the rest of the camera. Because the assembly can move, and the edge of the chassis is quite sharp, the connector eventually breaks at the point where it passes through the lens assembly chassis. It starts off as an intermittent problem, but eventually becomes permanent
