Why is my battery prohibited on international passenger flight

When I received my package from ifixit it came in a box with a large sticker saying prohibited on passenger aircraft. I assume it’s because it’s a lithium battery. IATA rules specify that a battery rated below 100Wh is allowed as a carry on item as long as the lithium metal content is between 2g and 8g. My new battery is rated 95Wh and with a total of 8660Mah it’s not possible for the metal content to exceed the 8g per cell.

I’ve also checked the airline rules and they specify exactly what IATA have.

So why the sticker?

There is a big difference between shipping a battery Vs personally having it with you on a plane!

iFixit needs to comply with shipping rules, hence they can’t ship batteries via air. They need to mark the package declaring it must not travel by air freight (DHL, FedEx, UPS or USPS/foreign postal services),

As far as what you do hand carrying the battery onboard, you can without any problems! As you’ve noted its well within the limits of US and IATA rules.

But! You will want to remove the labels from the box so you don’t scare anyone! Frankly, I would get a thick poly bag which you can put the battery into so you don’t waste the space given what else you will be carrying if you are leaving it bare!

More than likely a general statement, if in doubt contact your airline. I personally have taken them of flights before, and was all fine.
