Why is my backlight flickering?

I have a late 2009 21.5 inch iMac. The backlight flickers after a lot of use, and sometimes it just doesn’t work at all. The bottom half of the screen is yellower than the top half. I think that this may have something to do with the computer overheating, because I have vacuumed out a bunch of dust from the bottom of the iMac, and it works better for a bit, before the backlight starts flickering again. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong, or what I might have to do to fix it? If so, any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I can explain the yellow screen issue as that’s a burnt backlight reflector. You may also have a few dead LED’s as well which you’ll need a new LED strip

The winking out is also related at a common issue is the power feed wires to the light strip become loose at the solder joints (cold solder joint). I would likely replace there strip if this is the case.

It will take some doing as you’ll need to first take the display fully off and then very carefully remove the backplate to get to the backlight strip. Using some aluminum duct tape(metal) you can cover over the burnt area. Here’s a great view of things one of our iFixit folks produced. Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2308 显示屏更换

Make sure you do this repair in a dust free room as it won’t take much to leave a telltale trail of marks on your screen at the end.

The other direction if this is too much is just replace the display assembly. Also, consider the screen’s conditions beyond the backlight.
