Is there a hack to repair the display without replacing a new display?

Hey Guys!

I have been recently more interested in how display technology works after I started to see display issues and that costing us a price which is equivalent of buying a good iPad Pro.

Context:

On Jan 2021, My MacBook Pro fell down. It’s pretty much a new laptop and thankfully when I opened it, it was working fine. I felt happy but for few minutes my heartbeat was pumping up. I know it’s a material thing, but I really love that than any thing else I possess.

Then after a month, it start to have one issue where it will show black screen but if I close it and open again, this will go away. So I was following that method for near 3 weeks. Then last week it started showing different colors of flickerness. It was worrying and then it started to show half of the screen and the rest was flickering. And now it sort of black and today the situation may be different.

When I went to authorized service center, they said it cost me around $700-800 to replace and without even diagnosis it’s confirmed by them it’s a display issue.

Maybe they are right but I like to think alternatives ways to fix this.

Have any of you cracked a solution for this?

Well you can try some of the non invasive fixing tactics in this Apple thread or you can try to get your hands on a new flex cable or display. I would probably go to a few different places to get a second opinion on your screen issue and if they agree then you gotta decide if you want that laptop anymore. That model is very hard to fix. I wish you good luck!

Thank you Reid for the link! I checked them and tried this solutions before. Am also guessing it’s the flex cable.

Am planning to order ifixit toolkit and test this myself

Plus also will go to other authorised service center and double check

Looking for some hacks from others.

Sadly, you do have a flex cable issue. There are four cables from the lid which connect up with the T-CON board

So when your system fell the hinge area (black cover) was hit which pressed against these cables. From your description your backlight cable and one of the display cables got damaged and as you used your system things got worse. There is no options to fix this other than replacing the full lid assembly. Hi @Dan,

I believe you are the expert. And yes, I see from the pictures that these cables cannot be replaced. I will continue to look for other options, there must be other options.

I’m not planning to invest any more money in MAC. My next purchases will be just second hand MAC for a cheaper price with very less configuration. Then take that display and use it for my MAC.

Then setup that second hand MAC as a fixed desktop for my office usage with an extended display.

I’m an Apple fan boy, but I would expect they provide bit modularity in costly things like displays.

@JK Baseer - Yes I agree! More modularity and less glue! The truth is Apple is still going deeper into fewer parts is better philosophy! The new M1 systems have fewer parts than the ones they replaced!

While they yell out how green they are, they don't tell you how bad they stiff the buyers of their devices! Both cost and waste wise! Sadly, they are not the only ones.
