MacBook turns off/sometimes bootloops when charger is removed

Hi All,

I have a 2.2Ghz variant of this laptop which is exhibit a weird issue. It seems to work fine when on the charger but as soon as the charger is removed it will either freeze and shutoff or shutoff immediately. The battery is detected and is in supposedly good condition. It then proceeds to either bootloop or get stuck with the display off, trackpad and keyboard dead but with the keyboard backlight on.

The only way to get to bootup again is to plug in the charger, then clear SMC and then press the power button. Have tried the on device diagnostics but it didn’t pick up any issues. Anyone have any ideas?

I also checked the Apple Service Program for Mid 2015 and it seems that mine would be eligible. Could it possibly be a bad battery and would they replace it, because they would need to use a charger to run the diagnostics.

Hey mate.

Thanks for the response. Added the coconutbattery snapshot in the original post. That and the diagnostics were the first things I did.

As for which service program. I was referring to the following: https://support.apple.com/en-au/15-inch-...

I am more than happy to to repair it myself. Long time tinkerer and basic electronics repairer, so I am not afraid to get my hands dirty but if board repair was required, it would be slightly above my current capabilities.

Edit: Should say, this isn't my laptop. Bought it for a stupid cheap price and I mean stupid cheap. Opened it up and it was truely disgusting and chock full of dust. No signs of water damage though except for a little bit of greenish residue on the magsafe daughter board which I cleaned up with some iso.

Not sure what Apple Service Program you are thinking of. Are you thinking of this? Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty

I don’t see a battery issue, you clearly have a logic board problem which will need someone with deeper skills to work out.

Did you check to see if your system is covered under the battery replacement program? If it is I would first get that fixed by Apple. Maybe when you get it back it might get fully fixed!

My battery is covered under the program but as I need to perform a SMC reset to even get it to boot after plugging it in, I worry that I would be rejected. Located in Australia if that makes any difference.

I assume you'll need to ship it to the Apple repair depot given COVID lock down

Drain the battery and unplug it, then press the power button for 15 secs to fully drain the board, now plug the battery in. That way it will power up when they plug in the MagSafe that should cover you.

Sounds perfect but I can't drain the battery because it refuses to run on battery either for too long or not at all

If the issue happens when unplugged, it’s most certainly due to the battery

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was thinking as well.

At times when the charger is unplugged it turns off and then goes into a reboot loop. Other times it turns off then on again, comes to the login screen, I can use it for a little while and then it shuts off again
