Right brake light and Dashboard lights not working

My dashboard and right brake light are not working. The left brake light and middle both work. When I turn on my headlights the dash does not illuminate. I've changed all the fuses and still nothing. What might be my next step?

Hi @alicia_marie ,

Did you check that the right hand (RH) stop light bulb was OK, you didn’t say?

If the bulb is OK check if there is 12V DC voltage getting to the bulb socket connector when the brake pedal is depressed. Be aware that it is a twin filament bulb i.e. two lights in the one bulb - tail light and stop light, so if there is no voltage on one connector pin in the socket try the other one.

If there is voltage at the bulb connector, check that the earth connection for the bulb socket is OK but suspect that it is OK as you didn’t say that the RH tail light wasn’t working and they share the same earth connection. If the earth is OK check for corrosion in the bulb socket connector

If there is no voltage at the bulb connector, here’s a link to the 2004 Corolla wiring diagrams. Go to p.94-95 to find the wiring path for the Rear Combination Light RH which shows where the wires go from the brake pedal switch to the bulbs. Given that the LH and the High Mounted (centre) stop lights work OK you only have to focus on the RH wiring path.

With the dash lights, did you check that the instrument panel dimmer switch (example only) is turned fully on, you didn’t say?

if it is then is it only the combination meter lights (speedo etc) or do other lights such as the light for the cigarette lighter, rear window defogger switch, blower switch etc also not light up when the headlights are turned on?

Looking at p.227 in the wiring diagrams it may be a faulty instrument panel dimmer switch as the power for all the lights in the dashboard go through it. (shown as R7 Rheostat in the diagram). If only the combination meter then it still may be the dimmer but could also be the lights or the connection to the lights in the meter itself.

Hopefully this is of some help.

Thank you! I did not expect a response so quickly! I have since replaced the rear right light bulb and when I press the brake pedal all three do light up. When I turn on my headlights the dashboard, AC controls and gear shift do not light up and the rear lights do not illuminate. I removed my dash to access and replace the bulbs but this morning on my way to work the cluster, AC controls and gear shift light up for a few seconds. This was accompanied by a sound that seemed to be coming from the glove box that I can only describe as an "electric current" sound. I've replaced all of the necessary fuses in the interior and exterior fuse boxes as well. I've seen a lot about the brake light switch possibly needing to be changed.

I have checked the dimmer switch and all of the other controls next to it do work. The mirror adjusters and the security light that blinks.
