Why can't I get my joy con to connect for 2player mode?

I can't seem to get my left joy con to connect when I try to do 2 player mode. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting. And I've tried to re-sync but neither worked. The right joy con has connected though. Not sure what to do now apart from buying new joy cons.
