USB 3.2 Type C operating at 2.0 speeds

My 27” iMac (2020) USB 3.2 Type C ports are only operating at USB 2.0 speeds.

Anyone know why this is? I'm on the latest Catalina update, I've run diagnostics - there's no hardware issue, my Type A ports all work absolutely fine - but as soon as I plug an SSD into the Type C port the transfer speed shows up as "up to 480Mb/s". I should be getting 10Gb/s.

Please tell me someone knows how to fix this? can't find any USB C drivers to install, or any other fix. SMC resets don't do anything either. I've got bootcamp - but I doubt that's the issue.

My only other option at this point is to update to Big Sur, hoping it'll fix the ports. But I really, really don't want to do that.

What is the make and model of the SSD you are using also what is the USB-C cable you are using. Some won't offer the full data rate.

Like Dan mentioned above not all USB type C cables are the same you can still purchase a USB C cable (as well as an SSD although that's less likely) that is only capable of USB 2.0 I would potentially try a different cable and confirm with another device that the cable is USB 3.2 Capable
