Need a Logic board upgrade, help

Hi

I have a “15 retina display mid 12(A1398) 2.3ghz, i7 quo-core, 256gb, 8gb ram. (im from italy)

My logic board just died on me. Since I need to buy a new one, can i just buy the the 2.7/8 ghz, 16gb ram? Will just fit right for my pc? if the answer is “yes".

Also can i buy a Samsung 960 evo SSD for this new Logic board and will it fit?

which kit do i need to buy from ifixit.com to get this job done? thank you very much.

While you can replace the logic board with one that was designed for your system MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement finding a replacement will take some effort I haven’t seen one available from my typical supplers. I would be careful on any jobber listing on Amazon or eBay.

As far as the SSD this series uses a mSATA drive so the Samsung 960 won’t work as its a PCIe/NVMe drive. Review this guide for more details: The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

Given how much you want to change I would recommend you look at just buying a newer used system. I would recommend going with a 2015 model. Just be aware there is two different versions of the last retina’s MacBookPro11,4 - Intergrated Graphics and MacBookPro11,5 - Dedicated GPU so make sure you get the one you want.

Thank so much for you time and answer on this. I already did a quick research on a new version but giving the time we are living in and my tight pockets i can't afford a “new” used version. my same mac still selling for over €750.

i rather spend 300 to 400 and have a “top of the line" mac. i dont know much about macs, but mine doesn't seen far behind the new ones. I use my mac for video, photo editing, programming and Machine Learning using the nvidia card that have on it.

@banginpadr - I hear you! The problem is finding a 2012 logic board, you might be able to install an Early 2013 board. Thats the best you can do. But the cost is still a bit steep MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Early 2013) 2.7 GHz Logic Board $650 USD. That still doesn't address the drive upgrade you where also looking for. This systems drive I/O is constrained to SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) of the mSATA interface.

The only option is get around that would be to get a USB 3 or Thunderbolt 2 external SSD drive.

I just found a used system for $560 USD on eBay that looks very clean! 2015 15" MacBook Pro - MJLT2LL/A Just be careful!

15" MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz Core i7 Mid-2015 (DG) While not a 2.7 GHz it offers more performance than the 2012 model with the higher speed SSD.
