Sound intermittently doesn't work, sometimes tabs need reloading

Hi,

The laptop model is slightly different to chosen as there wasn’t an option for it: Acer Aspire 515-51G-77DD.

I have had an issue recently where my sound will intermittently and under no seemingly obvious pattern, stop working on certain tabs. I will need to refresh once or a couple of times and it usually works again. Also, when this happens, if the video has its own audio level slider, I will not be able to move it and when I initially click the slider to move it, there will be sound for a split second and then I will be able to move it but the sound disappears and the slider will jump back to no sound, with no sound playing.

Additionally, perhaps related as it started a week or two after this issue, some tabs will go sort of ‘blank’ when I click off them. For example I open an excel sheet on teams and click on to another tab. Then when I click back onto the sheet tab, I can’t see the sheet and will need to reopen it, though the web address and sidebar will be correctly displayed. Other people working on the same sheets don’t have this problem.

Not sure if it’s possibly an ad on/virus/idk???

Please help/advise. TIA! :)

At first look I would say this is a software or operating system problem.

Your decription is a little too general. “Tabs” what Tabs? Be more specific. What program, browser, what? Does it only happen in Excel, etc.

On the other hand sound drivers may be corrupted.

Try uninstalling the Sound drivers in Control Panel > Device Manager

then after that Device Manger > Action > Scan for hardware changes.

This should re-install the drivers and fix the problem.

Let us know how it goes.

O.K. that’s clearer. Go to Acer’s website, download the audio drive and install it.

Thank-you for your reply!

Sorry I'm not very tech savvy. For both audio and the 'blank' issue, I meant internet tabs, I believe it happens in any browser (I have tried Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge). It potentially also happens for web apps too. For audio it could be that it also affects sound in programs, I'm not sure, it happens erratically so I can't just test it out.

I have given that a go. It will take a couple of days for me to realise if it has worked as, as I've said sometimes the issues doesn't arise for a couple of days.

Not sure if this gives any insight but: I ran the troubleshooting report for audio playback problems. I'm not really sure what it means though as it seems to say 'Issues found' as 'Generic Audio Driver' but doesn't specific what the issue is and for each 'Potential Issue Checked' the report says 'Issue not present'.

You just don't have the specific audio installed. See revision above. What does the Device Manager (in Control Panel) show for Sound?

The first fix didn't work unfortunately as I've had the same issue today. The device manager shows both:

Intel(R) Audio Display

Realtek High Definition Audio(SST)

Have tried the second suggestion of downloading the audio drive from Acer's website. Not sure if I downloaded it correctly, I just pressed download. Immediately, it doesn't seem to work. Do I need to restart my laptop for it to work?

@maz Did you check your download folder? Or maybe their server was down for maintenance. Try again another time. I just tried it here and downloads fine.

Another option is running something like IOBit's "Driver Booster 8.1" which updates all drivers on your system.

Sorry as in I wasn't sure if anything needed to be done after pressing download.

I think I did download it (as in it's in my downloads folder). I am still having the same issue though.
