How to transfer data from SSD on water damaged mid-2015 MacBookPro?

I have unfortunately damaged the logic board on my mid-2015 15” MacBook Pro Retina through water damage and the data was not backed up (I know…will not be making that mistake again).

I took the laptop to the Apple Genius Bar and they removed the SSD and advised I should be able to transfer the data using an SSD enclosure/caddy.

However, I have not been able to find an enclosure which is compatible with the SSD in my MacBook - it is a Samsung AHCI SSD (12+16 pin). I have checked with OWC and this type of SSD is not supported by their envoy pro enclosure.

Are there any other enclosures available which would allow me to transfer my data from this SSD, or any other types of solution?

I would appreciate any advice - thank you in advance!

The person you spoke with at OWC was mistaken! The blade SSD your system has is supported with the case I've linked to below.

Thank you Dan. I had seen the below information on the OWC website so was concerned I would lose my data if I tried this case. Didn’t want to end up worse off!

“Apple NVMe SSDs (all models), and AHCI SSDs made by Samsung (models from 2015 or later), while physically compatible with the Envoy Pro (OWCMAU3ENPRPCI), are not supported”

and

“If you installed the drive in the Envoy Pro and then experience data loss, there's a good chance it is one of the Samsung-manufactured AHCI models noted above.”

Cherry picking the notes will tell you anything you want to hear! Lets reread what the note states fully!

"Important Note: The OWC Envoy Pro enclosure has been specifically designed for use ONLY with select Apple Flash SSDs from most 2013 to 2015 Mac models. Do NOT attempt to install or use an OWC Aura, Aura Pro, Aura Pro X or Aura Pro X2 SSD in the Envoy Pro as you can damage the OWC SSD, enclosure, or both. Such damage is not covered under warranty. "

That states you can't use the OWC SSD in the OWC Envoy case. Are we doing that? No!

"Please Note: The OWC Envoy Pro enclosure is not compatible with stock Apple Toshiba drives. Please see the Knowledge Base article on Envoy Pro (PCIe): Apple Stock Drive Compatibility for further details."

Is your SSD a Toshiba SSD? Until you open the system and check it we don't know.

"Compatibility Issue:

Apple NVMe SSDs (all models), and AHCI SSDs made by Samsung (models from 2015 or later), while physically compatible with the Envoy Pro (OWCMAU3ENPRPCI), are not supported."

Did you follow Envoy Pro (PCIe): Apple SSD Compatibility To see if you have a NVMe SSD.

OWC has a typo in there page as the AHCI SSD's are supported! Its the NVMe that is the issue with this carrier.

Interesting - the typo changes things!

Yes, I followed the guide on the OWC website and looking at the SSD itself (it had already been removed), it does not have Apple printed on it anywhere (only Samsung) which they advise indicates it is AHCI.

Thank you for your help!

@smc1 - Plug in the Samsung drive info here: BeetsTech it should return the drives specs.

Samsung made most of Apples custom SSD's so you can't make the generality of all Samsungs are this vs that.

Your SSD is likely a custom Samsung blade SSD (AHCI/PCIe 3.0 x4)

Here’s the guide to get to it MacBook Pro(15英寸,带有视网膜显示屏,2015年中期)SSD更换

If you need to salvage your data you’ll need a special case like OWC Envoy Pro - Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Storage Enclosurefor select Apple Flash SSDs from most 2013 to 2015 Mac Models
