Replacement battery won't charge

My OEM battery was starting to fail. It wouldn’t hold a charge as long as it used to and the laptop started to shut down without any low battery warning. It would shut down with the battery status anywhere between 10%-40%. The battery performance appeared to get worse over time, to the point where the laptop would shut down even when the power adapter was plugged in. It seemed to be a thermal issue with the battery. The OS utility diagnostics indicated to replace the battery.

I replaced the battery with what was pitched as an OEM replacement part. I did not purchase the battery through ifixit. After replacing the battery, the computer started off battery alone, but the status in Energy Saver said “Current battery charge: 0%”. I did the SMC reset, but when I tried to power up the laptop wouldn’t boot. I assumed the battery was completely drained. I charged it overnight, ~24 hours and the light on the Mag Safe 2 adapter was still orange. I powered up the laptop with the adapter still plugged in. I checked Energy Saver and it still indicated 0%. I downloaded coconutBattery and it also indicates that no charging is happening. coconutBattery also shows 1979-11-30 as the manufacturing date. I don’t know if that’s a default if the utility doesn’t see the battery or if it’s an indication that the micro on the battery board is “in the weeds”.
