Why does it keep stopping during the cycle?

I have a Kenmore 500 washer. It looks like the 400. It keeps stopping during the cycle until I lift the lid a little to restart it. It also will agitate with the lid fully raised. I think it might be a bad switch but am not for sure. I am unable to locate though where the switch may be. Can anybody help me out? Thanks in advance!
